About the Author
John Bird was born in a slum-ridden part of Notting Hill just after the Second World War. Homeless at five, in an orphanage at seven and in prison several times, John became involved in politics in his late twenties and went on to run his own business. At the age of forty-five he started production of the Big Issue. In June 1995 he was awarded the MBE for ‘services to homeless people’.
